Search Engine Optimization Manager "People are where they find you!" ~

A Good domain name and “findability”

Back in 2001, the company for which I was working for, eventually closed (no, it had nothing to do with my work, at least no one told me that !). I found myself in the position of looking for new job opportunities and tell me what’s the best way to find a job, answer : Google.
So I went out to check what a good domain name could be, and I found out my job title: “intégrateur html” (meaning html coder in French) was available, so I thought it could well increase my visibility, I picked www.integrateurhtml.com, even though, I thought it was a bit snooty, I never thought myself as “the” only/best html coder in France. But it was there, waiting for someone, so I thought well fine, this is great, you know what they say: The early bird catches the worm. With only a bit of work for this website in fact it’s more like a curriculum vitae, it allowed me to offer a real presence with many keywords (monteur html, intégrateur html, montage css2, etc). In fact I’ve been first page for quite a while on Google (both .fr and .com) and other search engines, I guess this is how I became aware of how important being visible matters.
Many reasons for that :

  • My domain name includes keywords, search engines love it.
  • Keyword density is fine.
  • Historically, I’ve been there for quite a long time and it makes a difference.
  • From an organic point of view semantic markup is respected.
  • This site is valid w3c.org

Lately, I’ve been focusing on www.seomanager.fr and despite only a few post, rare comments and a few outbound links, things seems to turn pretty well. Yes, my domain name fits my activity, but they are, many, thousands of websites mentionning seo manager. It’s even more impressive when you take a look at Google.com (May 5Th 2008 ), I’m 3rd place with “seo manager” keywords. Nice job, isn’t it ?!

Search engines are changing and from now on what is now commonly called “findability” will be involved

While alot of things could go against it, my server is located in Germany (Yes, i know I’m french.) and this site is in english. It is brand new, I have a poor PageRank, which some might say: it doesn’t really matter, I’m often struggling with my english writing skills to get things correctly, so the one thing coming to mind could be : How come ?
Well I guess search engines are changing and from now on what is now commonly called “findability” will be involved.

Basically this means a website is whole: usability, accessibility, information architecture, development, marketing, copywriting, design, SEO.

Findability refers to the quality of being locatable or navigable. At the item level, we can evaluate to what degree a particular object is easy to discover or locate. At the system level, we can analyze how well a physical or digital environment supports navigation and retrieval… © wikipedia.org

Being good at buying sponsored links won’t do, deep understanding of how internet is built and how it should structured will be required.
In case you have not read this yet, my homepage Seo manager what? goes through what are the fundamentals in html coding and what a website should be made of.

If you want to dig a bit more this subject, here are great articles and websites you should read :

And also bad design, just to be aware !

I wonder what could be the translation in French for findability = Trouvabilité ? (C’est moche !)
This was just in case you were wondering why I, myself, own seomanager.fr, I mean more than someone else.

Personnaly, I think the primary feature that makes your website quite easy to find and offers a really good position on Google is your domain name. I did an experience with one of my client on buying many related domains pointing them on the same website but having the same explicit naming and it surely gets me many many visits ! I’m convinced that it’s how you get so much popularity as fast as a train. :) http://seomanager.fr is quite revelant. But, becareful to use the correct TLD. In your case it’s .fr and register to french website. ;)

    Keep rolling !

I know, I’m supposed to do Search Engine Optimisation, but I just can’t avoid mentioning Findability, Finding the right approach in adding lasting value to a Web site over the long term.

Gradually building authority through clever content and inching my way to the top of the SERP’s is my goal. Search Engine Optimisation is part of a whole, and it’s hard to pretend you do SEO when you don’t pay attention to what matters most : VISITORS.

Particular sign: I love doing it without any of the fluff.

Personnal moto: Be creative, ideas are under-evaluated!
